		<description>FAIR WINDS AND FOLLOWING SEAS

a light-based typographic installation designed and prototyped in 2013

This work was a collaborative piece with Sarah Gibbons.

The prototype was completed as part of a workshop to manipulate typographic form using alternative tools and methods available to typeface designers, with the aim of constructing a “linguistic monument” using the language of a specific workforce. Speaking to the trade of sailors, the prototyped installation was designed to wish good luck to sailors leaving for sea. It was created using water, photography, and digital manipulation.

The final piece is a projected light installation of the phrase “fair winds and following seas.” The type animates to give the feel of movement: both wind and water. The goal of the animation was to replicate the movement of water and wind through atypical typographic manipulation, and would theoretically be projected onto a boat at a large port.

		<description>Art2Wear 2013

fashion show sub-brand development and implementation for 2013

Art2Wear, started twelve years ago by an enthusiastic group of students and Professor Vita Plume, is an educational event where students gain experience by coordinating and producing an annual runway show. Young designers are challenged to imagine, create, and inspire by expressing their point of view through fashion and wearable art. This highly anticipated runway show fuses the talents of both NC State’s College of Design and College of Textiles, exposing student designers to the broader field of fashion. A2W attracts approximately 4,000 attendees in addition to encouraging participation and collaboration through engaging the student body, the Raleigh community, and the broader design industry.

I had the opportunity this year to work within the existing brand to create a sub-brand for the 2013 season. The artifacts designed for the year included a logo, series of event posters, lecture series posters, save-the-date postcard, printed commemorative booklet, tickets, and web banners.

The work for this season also included branding for a fundraising event called Stomp the Heels, which was a short race in hight heels. The components designed for this event included a logo, save-the-date postcard, event posters, web banners, and runners’ signs.

ANTIPODEAN
a Stuck in the Middle album

Antipodean {an·tɪ·pəˈdi·ən}
noun
1. Of or pertaining to opposition or difference
2. Situated on a diametrically opposed side

Stuck in the Middle (SIM) is Middlebury College’s freshest, cleanest, newest, all-male a cappella group. Their newest album is Antipodean, an album of contrasts: complex and raw, ambitious and personal, classic, contemporary, playful, serious.

The group approaced me to design a cover for their upcoming album, Antipodean. The goal of the cover was to represent the theme of “antipodean” through complementary colors and through a departure from the feel of past album covers. The group wanted to keep the visual theme of silhouettes, which are present in their 2010 album cover, but use them to take the cover in a new, more polished direction.

The album was printed in fall of 2012, but is currently only available for purchase through iTunes or at a Stuck in the Middle performance.

CARET
an app for inspiration facilitation

This app is a tool for designers, artists, and other visual creatives. It helps alleviate creative block and helps the user catalogue their own writings, photos, and inspirations. The design experiments with iPad gestures as well as with creating a recognizable and learnable system of use.

CARET: app

The mobile application is the heart of Caret. With it, a user can access and use any part of the service. The Caret app also exists as a website. However, the website does not include the camera, journal, and map features. The inspiration randomizer function helps users gain inspiration without needing to browse the work of other designers.

The profile/self page is the home page for the user in both the mobile and web version. This is a place where the user can catalogue their self-inspiration using the journal and the camera roll. These can also be displayed on a map so that a user can track places that were most inspiring to them. They can also manage mail-order subscriptions to daily prompts, inspirations, and project prompts, browse saved inspirations, and submit new items.

The randomizer is the inspiration catalogue, both usersubmitted and not. Things and places are mentioned in a sort of stream-of-consciousness, overlapping manner. A user can chose to read or view the whole excerpt/article/quote/picture, or can click/tap on a link or button within the item to move on to another (not necessarily related) item.

&#60;img src="http://payload132.cargocollective.com/1/2/70256/4950802/caret_1.jpg" width="670" height="750" width_o="670" height_o="750" src_o="http://payload132.cargocollective.com/1/2/70256/4950802/caret_1_o.jpg" data-mid="26678030"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

CARET: box

The box is a mail-order set of Caret design prompts and activities. Box subscriptions can be managed through the app. Box subscriptions can also take the form of daily postcards or emails. The purpose of the box is to lend a physical, tactile aspect to Caret. The physicality of the box and its cards can be inspiring in a way that is impossible with a purely digital interface.

CARET: iTunes ad

The purpose of the iTunes ad is to promote user interest. The ads are cohesive with each other and with the brand. They showcase the glossiest, most eye-catching parts of what Caret has to offer.

VERTICES
Duke University Journal of Science and Technology

For about five issues now, Duke's Vertices editors have partnered with a design team from NC State University to produce an undergraduate research journal featuring scientific research from Dukes undergraduates as well as a cohesive and professional design from NC State's student graphic designers.

I had the pleasure of designing articles for two issues, and then leading the design team for the current issue for Spring 2013, which was a publication about twice the size of previous issues. As Lead Designer, my responsibilities included the cover, table of contents, and other front- and backmatter for this issue as well as traditional article responsibilities like the rest of the designers.

The process begins with a team of designers decidint on a typographic and layout system for the current issue of the journal. The team then recieves articles from the editors at Duke. These articles are flowed into a template created by the lead designer. Each designer on the team receives one to three articles depending on the length of the volume. These designers make illustrative choices and select pull quotes for the article. The volume is then readied for printing by the lead designer. The magazine printed at Chamblee Graphics. Traditionally it is stapled, as is common for a magazine of the size. The post recent issue was perfect bound due to its larger page count.

PULSAR

a publication about space, designed and printed Fall 2011

Consisting of both web and print components, Pulsar is a magazine about space for people who aren’t astrophysicists. Consisting of two core sections, “Home” and “Frontier,” the magazine explores our relationship with space and discovering the unknown.

PULSAR magazine

The print version of Pulsar is an experimentation in type for sustained reading. It pushes the boundaries of what type can do to facilitate reading, and considers alternatives to conventional magazine reading mechanisms such as the pull-quote and the paragraph break. The print version also explores the taxonomy and hierarchy of a traditional magazine by pulling together feature-length articles as well as shorter articles, interviews, and advertisements.

&#60;img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/2/70256/2661646/pulsar7.jpg" width="670" height="450" width_o="670" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/2/70256/2661646/pulsar7_o.jpg" data-mid="13571177"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/2/70256/2661646/pulsar2.jpg" width="670" height="450" width_o="670" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/2/70256/2661646/pulsar2_o.jpg" data-mid="13571171"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/2/70256/2661646/pulsar3.jpg" width="670" height="450" width_o="670" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/2/70256/2661646/pulsar3_o.jpg" data-mid="13571172"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/2/70256/2661646/pulsar4.jpg" width="670" height="450" width_o="670" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/2/70256/2661646/pulsar4_o.jpg" data-mid="13571173"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/2/70256/2661646/pulsar5.jpg" width="670" height="450" width_o="670" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/2/70256/2661646/pulsar5_o.jpg" data-mid="13571174"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/2/70256/2661646/pulsar6.jpg" width="670" height="450" width_o="670" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/2/70256/2661646/pulsar6_o.jpg" data-mid="13571176"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/2/70256/2661646/pulsar8.jpg" width="670" height="450" width_o="670" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/2/70256/2661646/pulsar8_o.jpg" data-mid="13571184"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/2/70256/2661646/pulsar.jpg" width="670" height="450" width_o="670" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/2/70256/2661646/pulsar_o.jpg" data-mid="13571169"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;&#60;img src="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/2/70256/2661646/pulsar9.jpg" width="670" height="450" width_o="670" height_o="450" src_o="http://payload18.cargocollective.com/1/2/70256/2661646/pulsar9_o.jpg" data-mid="13571185"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

PULSAR web

Morphing Pulsar into a web-based format required a consideration of already-estaplished typographic and iconographic systems. The goal was to allow a reader to transition seamlessly between the print version of the magazine and the web version.

Attention was also paid to the functionalities, limitations, and affordances of the screen-based format. Unlike the printed version of Pulsar, a careful menu navigation system had to be implemented, and had to be easily accessible from all stages of use.

STRIVING FOR MORE
a collaborative live silkscreening

In affiliation with a wonderful non-profit organization, Striving for More, I was invited, along with the wonderfully talented Austin Simmons, to support their cause through live silkscreening as they organized a silent auction at club Noir in downtown Raleigh. Before the night of the event, Austin and I collaboratively designed a two-color screenprint incorporating the Striving for More logo. During the evening, we produced and signed an edition of 100 prints which were given to guests throughout the night.

THE LOCAL'S MARKET
an organization for Community Supported Agriculture in Raleigh, NC, designed and branded Fall 2011

The Local's Market mission statement: "By acting as a bridge between local producers and consumers, we hope to build the foundation for a mutually sustained agricultural community."

The Local’s Market acts as an intermediary in the local agricultural community by seeking to understand the needs of consumers and matching them with the appropriate providers. Developing this consistent credibility will insure that our customers have a sense of loyalty and are confident in their investment.

Throughout the course of the project, we designed a logo, website, print catalogue, mutrition app, cooking app, packaging, as well as service blueprints for a delivery system and a community garden. I was directly responsible for the print catalogue, the product selection portion of the website, and the cooking app. I also contributed landscape illustrations used across project components, as well as an icon stsyem and a third of the photography utilized.

On the front end, the service is divided into four sections: Farm, Market, Garden, and Kitchen. Each section includes user experience touchpoints from across the service blueprint, and each has its own language to connect with users.

FARM: quality &#124; variety &#124; consistency &#124; credibility
From the field to our hands, we make sure we know how your produce is treated before it gets to you. We aim to develop a trusted relationship between providers of quality goods and local consumers by maintaining a rigorous selection process for our producers. All of our farmers, bakers, butchers &#38; artisans are insured consistent orders and courteous service. By engaging our customers in the narrative of the products they consume, we hope to strengthen the relationship between producer and consumer.

MARKET: efficiency &#124; freshness &#124; access &#124; customization
When it comes to picking your products, we’ll make it easy to find what you’re looking for. By providing a seasonal product catalog as well as an online marketplace, we make sure that our customers have the information they need to insure that they’ll get the product they want. Our intuitive automated system remembers your order history as well as dietary needs or restrictions. Delivery preferences also allow you to schedule your weekly drop-off.

GARDEN: advocacy &#124; initiative &#124; renewal &#124; sustainability
You can get your hands dirty, too! We’d love for you to join us in our community garden for a workday or attend a nutrition or food preparation event. The focus of the garden is to engage people in the processes that make local food production possible, as well as encouraging younger generations to take initative in the continuation of this movement. Volunteering in the garden allows you to receive credits towards your weekly basket.

KITCHEN: utilization &#124; creation &#124; active engagement
We don’t just stop at the doorstep, The Local’s Market follows our products all the way to your table. Our website features recipes catered to your weekly product selection. Cooking classes and our nutrition mobile app also help you actively engage in maintaining your diet. Let us take care of your shopping list so you can focus on enjoying the food!

The phases of the project included case studies and precendent research, local research and documentation, brand positioning, user audits, and finally, design and implementation. Creating a cohesive brand language was important for this project. We wanted the voice of the organization to come off as friendly, approchable, healthy, and user-friendly. It was also important for this systems design project to create a cohesive visual brand and kit-of-parts that could be applied to many platforms, media, and formats. The goal was to create a recognizable brand that would appeal to the target user audience.

One of the most important primary steps was our creation of a brand diagram. This was our point of departure and reference for every facet of the service we created, and includes physical service touchpoints as well as staff members responsible for each portion of the service.

This organization was conceived, branded, and prototyped in 2011. It was created by a team consisting of Zoë Symon and the ever-wonderful, multi-talented Garnet Fisher and Austin Simmons.

TERRA
a game of geology, designed and prototyped in Spring 2011

A first approach to game and system design, Terra is a game about geologic strata within the Earth, requiring players to answer questions and place tiles in order to win. The idea was to pick a non-design related class at NC State University and to design and prototype a game that would further knowledge and understanding of that subject area.

The box contains a removable game board that fits snugly in the lid for easier stacking, a rule book, deck of cards, and wooden tiles of four colors.
